New Scooters Law

Effective July 31, 2009, a new law will be effective that will require some motorized bicycles (typically referred to as scooters) to be registered as a, "Limited Use Motor Vehicle" with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. This new law suggests that scooters that qualify under the specifications for a, "limited use motor vehicle" will be subject to parking fines, traffic citations, insurance requirements, and registrations just as any motorcycle or other motor vehicle is.

Scooters and mopeds that will not be subject to the new law, as described in the article below, appear to be motorized bicycles with an engine capacity of 50 cc's or less that have a maximum attainable speed of 30 mph.

Some of the qualifying specifications for these vehicles to be subject to the law include but may not be limited to:

  • A motorized bicycle (could be classified as a scooter or moped, however not a motorcycle) that has a maximum attainable speed between 30-40mph (typically indicated by the manufacturer)
